How to care for wool
Caring for premium wool is an essential aspect of maintaining its beauty, texture, and longevity. Following a number of wool care steps is important in building a long-standing capsule wardrobe for both men and women, as this method will preserve the unique qualities of this exquisite material.
How to wash wool clothes
Wool is a delicate fabric that requires a gentle touch when it comes to washing. Always start by checking the care label on your wool garment. Some wool items are labeled as dry-clean only, while others may be suitable for hand or machine washing.
How to hand wash wool
Hand-washing wool is quick and easy. We recommend following these steps to ensure gentle washing of your wool pieces.
1. Turn your wool garment inside out, then hand wash in clean, lukewarm water, approximately 30°C, using a mild and gentle wool wash detergent. We recommend using the Leif x Jac + Jack everyday laundry detergent which features a concentrated, plant-based formula enriched with natural enzymes to cleanse and deodorize (offers up to 60 hand washes).
2. Allow to soak briefly for approximately 5 minutes before rinsing thoroughly firstly in lukewarm water, then finally in cold water. Gently squeeze out excess water and dry flat to minimise stretching.
How to machine wash wool
Some wool garments can be machine-washed in a gentle wash setting. We recommend checking the product care label to ensure your favourite wool pieces are machine washable before proceeding.
Wool garments should be washed on the wool setting (usually on a gentle cycle at 40°C). If your washing machine does not have a wool cycle, select the wash cycle for delicates with a cold water setting.
Use a mild wool wash detergent. The Leif x Jac + Jack everyday laundry detergent is a great option, offering 30 machine wash cycles and helping clean and deodorize with natural enzymes.
Lay garments flat to dry after washing to minimise stretching.
At Jac + Jack we recommend assessing your wool garments and the frequency of washing needed. Wool clothing does not need to be washed after every wear; it can often be aired out and spot-cleaned as needed. It's generally recommended to wash wool garments less frequently, perhaps every 4-5 wears, depending on your needs.
How to dry wool
Drying wool clothing properly is essential to maintain its shape, texture, and warmth. Follow the below steps for a seamless drying process.
1. After washing, lay your wool garment on a clean, dry towel. Roll up the towel and garment together, pressing lightly to absorb the excess water. Avoid wringing or twisting the wool, as this can distort its shape.
2. Spread another dry, clean towel on a flat surface away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Lay the wool garment flat on the towel, gently shaping it to its original form. You can reshape areas like the sleeves or collar by hand if necessary.
3. To ensure even drying, you may need to rotate the garment periodically. After the top surface has started to dry, flip it over carefully to allow the other side to dry. You may also need to replace the wet towel with a dry one if it becomes too damp.
4. Never hang wool garments to dry, as the weight of the water can stretch the fabric, causing it to lose its shape.
5. Allow the wool garment to air dry completely before storing or wearing it. This may take several hours or even a full day, depending on the thickness of the material and the humidity in the air.
How to iron wool
Ironing wool clothing requires careful handling to avoid damaging the fabric. Wool is a resilient fabric that can last a long time if cared for properly.
Set up your ironing board and cover it with a smooth, clean cloth to protect the wool fabric. Ensure the ironing board is stable.
Preheat the iron by setting it to the wool setting, which is often marked with a wool symbol or set to medium heat. Allow the iron to reach the designated temperature.
Dampen the wool using a spray bottle or a damp pressing cloth placed over the garment. This helps to generate steam and protect the fabric from direct heat.
Place the wool garment on the ironing board and iron in the direction of the fabric's weave. Use gentle pressure and avoid stretching the fabric.
After ironing, let the wool garment cool down and dry completely on a flat surface before folding or hanging it. This helps to set the shape and ensure it remains wrinkle-free.
How to remove stains from wool
Removing stains from wool requires a gentle approach to maintain the integrity of the fabric. It's essential to act quickly and use the appropriate cleaning methods and products to effectively lift the stain without damaging the wool.
If the stain is fresh, gently blot up as much of the spill as possible with a clean, white cloth. Avoid rubbing the stain, as this can push it deeper into the fibres.
Rinse the stained area with cold water from the backside of the fabric to help push the stain out of the fibres. Avoid using hot water, as it can set the stain permanently.
Apply a wool-safe stain remover or a mild detergent diluted with water directly to the stain. Use a soft-bristled brush or a cloth to gently work the solution into the stain in a blotting motion.
Rinse the area thoroughly with cold water. Gently squeeze out the excess water without wringing the fabric, as this can cause the wool to lose its shape.
Lay the garment flat on a clean, dry towel, and reshape it as needed. Allow it to air dry away from direct heat and sunlight.
Caring for your wool garments is a rewarding process that ensures your investment lasts for years to come. By following these tips for washing, drying, and storing, you can maintain the beauty, shape, and softness of your wool pieces. Embrace the art of wool care, and enjoy the timeless elegance of these luxurious fabrics season after season.
