Nestled on leafy Macleay in Sydney’s Potts Point, Grandiflora is more than just a flower shop—it’s a sensory journey led by its Creative Director and Founder, Saskia Havekes. With a deep connection to nature and a storied history rooted in art and craftsmanship, Saskia has amassed a cult following of familiar faces and loyal locals. She is a true Sydney icon.
We sat down with her to talk about flowers, creativity, and her relationship with Jac + Jack.
"Grandiflora has grown out of my passion for the natural world and flowers."
Saskia’s story begins in the Australian bush, where her childhood was spent catching yabbies, riding ponies, and baking damper after school. “Both my parents have imparted a creative outlook, and a history steeped in art practice,” she shares. “I grew up in my father’s ceramic and painting studio on the precipice of a valley of wildflowers.” It was this early immersion in nature and art that shaped her love for floristry—a love she’s nurtured ever since.
Grandiflora, founded in 1995, takes its name from the Magnolia grandiflora trees that surround its location. “These trees were flowering when we first opened, and I saw it as a good omen,” Saskia says. The name ‘Grandiflora’ denotes a variety of cultivated plant that bears large flowers, perfectly encapsulating the grandeur and elegance that have become synonymous with her brand.
"I rise at 4 a.m. to select flowers by hand—it’s a spiritual experience."
Saskia calls it her pre-dawn ritual. Three times a week, she visits the Sydney Flower Markets at dawn, hand-selecting every bloom. “The relationships with my growers are truly unique,” she says. “We see more of each other than anyone else. This builds respect, a tapestry of understanding, and knowledge for the seasonal offerings.”
Her meticulous approach ensures that every arrangement reflects the care and creativity that define Grandiflora. “It’s somewhat a spiritual experience,” she adds. “Hunting out the most exquisite specimens is an obsession.”
Saskia’s discerning community has played a significant role in shaping Grandiflora. “I’ve learned so much by truly listening to the nuances of what people want,” she reflects. “Their feedback has guided me into new thoughts and inventions.”
This sense of connection extends to her collaboration with Jac + Jack. “We are aligned in our craftsmanship, colour juxtaposition, attention to detail, and respect for each other’s history and beginnings,” she says. “And, of course, a shared sense of humour.”
"Simplicity and elegance—Grandiflora is a place to get excited within."
Grandiflora’s design space is a blend of simplicity and elegance. “It’s important that our space reflects our brand identity,” Saskia explains. “It’s a place to get excited in”. This approach mirrors Jac + Jack’s commitment to thoughtful design, creating an inspiring environment for customers to explore.
Saskia’s commitment to sustainability is evident in Grandiflora’s recent initiatives. “We’re transitioning to compostable solutions for our green waste and cardboard recycling,” she shares. This aligns with a broader philosophy of respect for the natural world—a value deeply embedded in Grandiflora’s DNA. When it comes to personal style, Saskia keeps it simple. “Mostly a workwear approach with a surprising touch of elegance,” she says. “Fabric is important. I’m loving the new Jac + Jack waxed jeans and comfortable twin lounge set—I could live in both.”
“If I could have peonies all year round, I would! My customers would love it.”
From peonies to pale pink waratahs, Saskia’s go-to flowers reflect her instinct for beauty and elegance. Each bloom tells a story, and Saskia ensures every arrangement is as unique as the person receiving it. At Grandiflora, flowers are more than just arrangements—they’re art, inspiration, and a celebration of nature. Much like Jac + Jack, Grandiflora is a testament to the power of thoughtful design and a deep respect for craftsmanship. Together, they create a beautiful synergy, reminding us of the elegance found in simplicity.
