Details
Among Equals Bilum bags are handwoven by artisan weavers in Papua New Guinea. Committed to honouring and promoting this ancient tradition on a global platform, Among Equals celebrates their art - capturing the weaver's craft and her story in each piece.
Chocolate: The Mat design is a creative, decorative pattern that can take many forms. Inspiration is taken from the floor mats that the women sit on when they come together to weave.
Black + White: The 2 Needle design is a legend, telling the story of two orphans, a brother and a sister. As they don’t have a mother to teach the sister how to weave Bilum, the brother suggests that she spies on the village women to watch them and learn their techniques. The sister did just that and now she knows the art of Bilum weaving.
Tan: The hourglass shaped Kundu Drum is used across Papua New Guinea in daily life and ceremonies. The Kundu design is inspired by this national icon, commonly believed to be the voice of their ancestors.
This Bilum is handwoven from acrylic and wool using traditional weaving techniques. As each piece is woven by hand they may differ slightly from the image pictured.
