AMONG EQUALS

The Among Equals mission is to make change through empowering communities of artisan weavers. They believe in the idea that colour, art, fashion and craft can be a platform for inspired storytelling and hope.

Among Equals Bilum bags are handwoven by artisan weavers in Papua New Guinea. Every Among Equals Bilum is unique - a one-of-a-kind work of art particular to the weaver and her home in Papua New Guinea. Committed to honouring and promoting this ancient tradition on a global platform, Among Equals celebrates their art – capturing the weavers craft and her story in each piece.

The village where they are made is a lush subtropical corner of India that is little known, we travelled there to meet the community and was struck by its beauty and artistry. Every year we do something different and each weaver brings some of their own flair. Over the years they have become collectors items and we are immensely proud of them, not only as beautiful items but because of the collaboration and connection we have to the people who make them.

Our signature has become the handmade pom poms that often edge our towels. They are made over many days and strung together in such a detailed way, adding a perfect finish. Portable works of art, hand made in limited edition.
The brand was founded by textile designer, Caroline Sherman, in 2015 after she fell in love with the craft of Bilum bags, which were on display at an annual Pacific Trade and Invests show in Sydney. That exhibition, entitled 'Marketi Ples' showcased the beauty of the Pacific region's traditional weavings, and it was here that Caroline first met Florence Jaukae and Ruth Choulai, each with incredible knowledge of the craft's cultural significance; it was the beginning of a wonderful friendship.

In 2015, Caroline made her first trip to Papua New Guinea to immerse in the weavers' world and view their annual Bilum Festival held in Goroka. During her travels, she met women from different regions and the idea for the Among Equals endeavour was cemented. Today, the brand works with communities across Papua New Guinea, including the Goroka, Mount Hagen, Telefomin and Madang regions, and is proud to count more than 600 weavers in its fold.
Through its trade of Bilum, Among Equals is dedicated to improving the communities wellbeing, including funding and construction the Blue Haus, a safe shelter for the weavers to come together, learn and weave.
